My Process
My number one priority is ensuring the comfort of the horse. My approach is twofold: static and dynamic fit. Firstly, I assess the saddle on the horse's back while stationary, ensuring it sits correctly. Then, I observe the horse in motion with a rider, ensuring freedom of movement without any hindrance. My hands-on approach, whenever feasible, guarantees maximum comfort for your horse.
With my extensive knowledge of saddle trees and biomechanics, I adeptly match horses and riders with their ideal saddle, ensuring optimal performance and comfort.
When fitting saddles for riders, I engage in detailed discussions to understand their specific needs and preferences. Watching the rider in motion allows me to fine-tune various aspects of the saddle, including seat size and depth, flap length and projection, twist width, and overall comfort. The saddle should enhance the rider's experience, aiding in proper positioning and allowing for a comfortable and secure ride tailored to their individual build and anatomy.
Here are the steps I take:
-
I start by closely examining the horse's conformation, body shape, and musculature. This includes evaluating factors like back length, wither height, shoulder shape, and overall condition.
-
Precise measurements of the horse's back are crucial. I use tools like a flexible curve to capture the shape and contours accurately to determine tree shape and width.
-
Based on the measurements and assessment, I carefully select the appropriate saddle tree size and shape that matches the horse's back shape. Long or short tree points will also be discussed if applicable.
-
I choose the right saddle pad to provide additional shock absorption and address any specific pressure points, taking into account the horse's individual needs.
-
Placing the saddle on the horse's back, I ensure it sits evenly and correctly, paying attention to its alignment with the horse's spine and proper clearance over the withers. I also check that the panels lay nicely along the horse’s back ensuring even weight distribution without pressure points or tree point impingement. This is one of my favorites to educate clients on!
-
(If Applicable) I check and adjust the gullet width to accommodate the horse's withers and spine, preventing pressure points and ensuring comfort.
-
Considering the rider's position and comfort is crucial. I make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper balance for the rider.
-
I check the contact and fit of the saddle panels along the horse's back, ensuring even weight distribution without causing discomfort.
-
Observing the horse in motion with the rider, I evaluate how the saddle performs during movement, checking for stability and ensuring it doesn't impede natural motion.
-
Any necessary adjustments, such as flocking adjustments, are made to achieve a precise fit. This may involve adding or removing flocking material to address specific pressure points. If saddle has foam panels, a shim pad may be used for any asymmetry.
-
I provide the rider with information on proper saddle care, maintenance, and any additional recommendations for optimal comfort and performance. I love to educate! The more questions, the better!
